New window installation for additions, remodels, and new openings.
Different scope than replacement — this covers windows going into a wall that didn't have one, or an opening that's changing size.
New window installation is a different project than replacement, and it's worth being precise about the distinction before you start collecting quotes. Installation means a window is going somewhere it wasn't before — a room addition, a converted garage or basement, a wall opening being enlarged, or new construction. Replacement means swapping an existing window in an existing opening.
What new installation actually involves
Because there's no existing window to reference, installation typically requires framing the rough opening to the correct size, installing proper flashing and a weather-resistant barrier, setting and shimming the new window plumb and square, then tying in siding, brick, or exterior finish material around it, followed by interior trim.
This is meaningfully more involved than a pocket replacement, and it shows up in both cost and timeline — expect a new installation to take longer per window and cost more than replacing an existing one, largely due to the framing, flashing, and finish work involved.
Common scenarios
- Room additions — new windows are part of the build from the start, usually coordinated with your general contractor.
- Basement or garage conversions — adding windows for light, ventilation, and (for bedrooms) legal egress.
- Enlarging an existing opening — going from a small window to a larger picture or bay window often means installation-level work even though a window existed there before.
- New construction — window installation as part of building a new home.
Egress requirements
If you're adding a window to a bedroom or converting a space into one, Indiana building code requires an egress-compliant window — a minimum clear opening size, sill height, and operable area sized for emergency exit. This is a code requirement, not optional, and it's worth confirming with your installer or local building department before finalizing window selection.
