How to Read and Compare Window Replacement Quotes

What to actually look for when comparing bids from different window installers — beyond just the bottom-line number.

A window quote that's just a total dollar figure isn't enough to compare fairly against another company's bid. Here's what should actually be itemized.

Frame material and product line

Vinyl, fiberglass, wood, or composite — and ideally the specific manufacturer and product line, not just the material category. Different product lines within the same material vary meaningfully in quality and warranty terms.

Glass package

Pane count (double or triple), whether Low-E coating is included, and the gas fill (argon or krypton) between panes. This should come with actual U-factor and SHGC numbers — see our guides on U-factor and SHGC for what those mean.

Installation scope

Confirm whether the quote is for a pocket (insert) replacement or full-frame work — these are meaningfully different scopes of labor, and a quote that doesn't specify which one leaves room for a surprise change order once work starts.

Warranty terms

Look for both a manufacturer's product warranty and a separate installer's labor warranty — they're not the same thing, and a strong product warranty doesn't help if poor installation is the actual point of failure.

What's excluded

Ask specifically what isn't included: interior trim work, exterior capping, disposal of old windows, and any structural repair if damage is found once the old window comes out.

Rule of thumb: if two quotes for a similar-sounding project differ by more than 20–30%, the difference is almost always explained by one of the factors above — not just markup. Ask both companies to itemize before deciding.

Related question

One more thing homeowners ask.

No — a significantly lower quote than others usually means a lower-tier product, a narrower installation scope, or corners being cut somewhere. Compare like-for-like specs first.
